Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • ⅔ cup white sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups bread flour

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water.
  • Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, until it becomes foamy.
  • Stir in the vegetable oil and salt.
  • Gradually add the bread flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it once to coat all sides.
  • Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and knead gently for a few minutes.
  • Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape each into a loaf.
  • Place the loaves into two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  • Cover and let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes, until it rises about 1 inch above the pans.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 30 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
  • Remove from the pans and cool on a wire rack before slicing.
