Ingredients
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1½-inch pieces
- 5 large garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter, cut into 8 pieces, plus more for serving
- ¾ cup whole milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
Directions
- Place the potatoes, garlic, and 1 tablespoon of kosher salt in a medium saucepan. Add enough water to cover the potatoes by about 1 inch.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the hot saucepan. Stir gently for about 1 minute to remove excess moisture.
- Add the butter one piece at a time, stirring gently after each addition until completely melted before adding the next piece.
- Pour in the milk or heavy cream and mash the potatoes with a potato masher until smooth and creamy.
- Stir in 1 teaspoon of kosher salt and the ground white pepper. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
- Transfer the garlic mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and top with additional butter if desired.
- Serve warm alongside your favorite main dish.
