Ingredients
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
1 egg
1 cup raisins (optional)
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a large baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, mix the sour cream and baking soda together and set the mixture aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt. Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it forms a crumb-like texture.
- Add the sour cream mixture and egg to the flour mixture. Stir gently until the dough is just moistened. Mix in the raisins if using.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Roll or pat the dough into a round shape about 3/4 inch thick.
- Cut the dough into 12 wedges and place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until the scones are golden brown on the bottom. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.
