Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • ¾ cup finely chopped onions
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 16 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 2 ½ teaspoons salt (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 cups ricotta cheese (or substitute cottage cheese)
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¾ pound shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 pound lasagna noodles (regular or oven-ready)

Directions / How to Cook

  • In a large skillet or saucepan, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, onions, and garlic over medium heat until the meat is browned and the onions are tender.
  • Drain any excess fat, then stir in tomato paste, tomato sauce, parsley, basil, 1 teaspoon salt, and sugar. Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for at least 1 hour for a deeper, richer flavor.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, ½ cup Parmesan cheese, oregano, and the remaining salt until well blended.
  • To assemble the lasagna: Spread a small amount of meat sauce at the bottom of the baking dish. Layer noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella cheese. Repeat the process until all ingredients are used, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
  • Cover with aluminum foil (lightly spray the underside to prevent sticking) and bake for 45–60 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.
  • For a golden finish, remove the foil and broil for 3–5 minutes until the top is slightly crisp and browned.
  • Allow the lasagna to rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing. This helps the layers set and makes serving easier.
