Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (250g)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, very cold (85g)
- ¾ cup whole milk (177ml) buttermilk or 2% milk can also be used
Directions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Grate the cold butter or cut it into small cubes, then add it to the flour mixture. Mix until the texture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour in milk and stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the dough tender.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and fold it over itself 5–6 times to create flaky layers.
- Gently press the dough to about 1 inch thick using your hands (do not roll).
- Cut out biscuits using a floured 2¾-inch cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet about ½ inch apart.
- Re-roll the dough scraps if necessary to make more biscuits.
- Bake for 12 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
- For extra flavor and shine, brush the warm biscuits with melted butter immediately after baking.
