Ingredients

  • 1 (6.5-ounce) jar oil-packed tuna, drained
  • 2 tablespoons finely diced celery
  • 1 tablespoon minced green onion
  • 2 teaspoons capers, drained
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, or more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Asian chile paste (such as sambal oelek)
  • ⅓ cup fresh mozzarella cheese, torn into small pieces
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter, divided
  • 2 thick slices French bread
  • ¼ cup shredded sharp white Cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste

Directions

  • Place the tuna in a mixing bowl and gently break it apart with a fork.
  • Add celery, green onion, capers, mayonnaise, chile paste, and mozzarella cheese.
  • Mix well and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Refrigerate the tuna mixture while preparing the bread.
  • Preheat the oven broiler and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Spread butter on both sides of the French bread slices.
  • Broil the bread for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown and toasted.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and place the darker toasted side facing down.
  • Divide the tuna mixture evenly between the bread slices and spread it to the edges.
  • Sprinkle shredded Cheddar cheese over the top of each sandwich.
  • Lightly dust with cayenne pepper.
  • Return the sandwiches to the broiler and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
