Ingredients
- 2 packets active dry yeast
- ¼ cup warm water
- 1 ½ cups lukewarm milk
- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- ⅓ cup shortening
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
- ⅓ cup butter
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 4 tablespoons hot water
Directions
- Sprinkle yeast over warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix the yeast mixture, milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening, and 2 cups flour.
- Beat the mixture until smooth.
- Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and roll it out to about ½-inch thickness.
- Cut the dough using a donut cutter.
- Cover the donuts loosely and let them rise again until doubled in size.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Stir in confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract.
- Add hot water gradually until the glaze becomes smooth and slightly thin.
- Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the donuts in batches until golden brown on both sides.
- Remove donuts and place them on a wire rack to drain excess oil.
- Dip warm donuts into the glaze and return them to the rack.
- Allow the glaze to set slightly before serving.
